It is with heavy hearts that we
announce the peaceful passing
of Peter Robert Plater on May
21, 2025, at the age of 89 at
Idlewyld Manor following a
long struggle with strokes and
dementia.
Peter was the muchloved
and
best friend of Jessie (nee
Williams). The couple
celebrated their 68th wedding
anniversary on May 17th. Peter
was predeceased by his
daughter, Kim McCumber (Eric)
of Long Reach, New
Brunswick, and survived by his
daughter, Jennifer Enright of
Dundas, Ontario.
Grandpa Peter will be missed
by his grandchildren, Brent
McCumber (Jennifer); Emily
McCumber (Kristian) and Laura
Davenport (Kyle), all of New
Brunswick, and Fiona Enright
of Toronto; and his greatgrandchildren,
Tessa and Riley
McCumber; Alexander
McCumber; and Wyatt and
Owen Davenport.
Peter was predeceased by his
parents, William and Alice
Daisy (nee Holland) Plater; and
by his four sisters, Phoebe,
Janet, Margaret, and Lois. He
will be fondly remembered by
his many nieces and nephews.
Growing up in Hamilton with its
proximity to Lake Ontario,
Peter developed a love for
boating. His first boats were
canoes, and he enjoyed taking
his young daughters to
Algonquin Park on canoe trips.
Pretty soon, though, the lure of
sailing took over, and he
became an avid sailor and took
part in club racing at The Royal
Hamilton Yacht Club, The
Boulevard Club, and Mimico
Cruising Club. While living in
Halifax, he was a member of
the Bedford Basin Yacht Club.
He went on cruising trips to the
Thousand Islands and the
North Channel, and when he
moved to Nova Scotia, he
experienced ocean sailing and
developed a love and
appreciation for the Maritimers
he met. Eventually, these years
of experience culminated in
cruising down the Inland
Waterway to Florida, crossing
the Gulf Stream to the
Bahamas, and journeying
down the Exuma Chain to
Georgetown.
Peter became a journeyman
carpenter after serving an
apprenticeship with
Abbotsford Homes in
Hamilton, followed by seven
years as a carpenter at Stelco.
Over time, he turned his
construction skills into a 25year
career with Owens
Corning Fiberglass, becoming
Sales Supervisor for Roofing
and Acoustics.
Peter was funloving,
charming, loved, respected,
and he had a sense of
adventure. He loved to travel.
He took his young family on a
monthlong
camping trip to
Europe, to Barbados, and
across Canada. In later years,
he and Jessie travelled to
every continent and ocean.
They visited the pyramids of
Egypt, Fiords in Iceland, the Taj
Mahal in India, and the Great
Wall of China.
Thanks to his mother nurturing
his interest in art from an early
age, Peter painted
watercolours, and during his
retirement, he became a
member of the Dundas Valley
School of Art, where he
enjoyed painting scenes of the
Dundas Valley.
The family extends a sincere
thank you to the staff at
Idlewyld Manor for their
compassionate care. A special
thank you to Dr. AnnaMarie
Emili for her care of Peter over
the years. Cremation has taken
place, and there will be a
private family gathering at the
Hamilton Cemetery at a future
date.
"May the wind be always at
your back."
