Arthur Jeffrey Smith
October 3, 1953 – Sept. 18, 2025
Passed away peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital Hospice in Hamilton due to declining health over the last year. Arthur was the son of Frances Marjorie Smith (Nash) and Gordon Harry Smith, cherished twin brother of Susan (Blair) Yager and older brother Doug (Janet). He will be missed by his nieces Pamela (Alex) Tasane and Carolyn (Jo) Lopez and his great nieces and nephew, Violet, August, Lily and Zoey.
A degree in textile technology at North Carolina State University in 1977, plus two diplomas at Mohawk College in Hamilton in Textile Technology and Accounting, led to a phase of his life when he lived and worked for different companies in Southern Ontario but he was at heart a Hamilton boy.
Arthur’s knowledge of family history was encyclopaedic and led to the publishing a genealogy for each branch of the family. As a younger man, he travelled to England several times researching the family tree.
As Marjorie and Gordon’s health declined, Arthur moved in to be their primary support person, giving up his apartment and future jobs.
He was a tireless worker for the congregation of Olivet United Church here in Hamilton. He was an integral part of the property team, using his handyman skills until the church closed in 2017. As a Steward, he also regularly took responsibility for recording the offering collection each week.
Arthur was a fierce supporter of the Blue Jays and the Raptors, although his heart belonged to the Tiger Cats.
In the last few years of his life, he enjoyed living at Caroline Place Retirement Home in Hamilton. Our thanks to all the staff for the excellent care and kindness he received.
Visitation will take place on Saturday October 25th at 12:00 noon, followed by a celebration of Arthur’s life at 2:00 pm and will be held at M.A. Clark and Sons Funeral Home, 567 Upper Wellington St., Hamilton. Reception onsite to follow. As per Arthur’s wishes, cremation has already taken place. A private family internment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Arthurs’ memory to the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, which supports the hospitals and doctors that gave him amazing care over many years, would be appreciated. Hamiltonhealth.ca/memorialgiving

It is with much sorrow and surprise that I learned of Arthur’s passing. We had been table mates for six years at one of Hamilton’s Retirement Homes. We used to meet every morning for breakfast and shared much of our life’s experiences with one another. With these fond memories and sentiments I send my heart-felt condolences to all the members of Arthur’s family and friends; and especially to his sister Susan whom I have enjoyed meeeting.
