Paul James McWhinnie

August 5, 1944 - April 10, 2026

In Loving Memory of Paul McWhinnie
Paul James McWhinnie, of Hamilton, in his 82nd year, passed on April 10, 2026. Paul was a devoted husband to Sharon (Shay), loving father to Kimberly (Chris Thompson) and Marnie (Mark Lambert), and amazing Papa to Andrew Thompson.
Paul was born on August 5, 1944, in England. He immigrated to Canada as a young boy with his parents, William (Mac) and Barbara McWhinnie. Throughout his life he made instant connections with fellow PKs (Pastor’s Kids). He developed his work ethic early in life, including being a paper boy at a very young age.
He studied business at McMaster University and became a Chartered Accountant. His business career spanned decades, working at Clarkson Gordon, Cope Construction and many years at Coppley Apparel Group (Cambridge Clothes), leading the company as President and CEO. His favourite business was his seasonal store, J.C. Canuck in Lion’s Head. There, he tested his retail ideas and promoted fun and community spirit. After retirement, he worked as a consultant with different businesses, and this gave him joy and purpose. He brought his sharp and strategic business mind to many organizations in the Hamilton community, serving on several boards, and as a school board trustee. His biggest legacy in business will be the business leaders and entrepreneurs that he mentored over the years with wisdom and compassion.
Paul was a true partner to his wife, Shay (d. 2021). Together they worked through all of life’s challenges and had a lot of fun antiquing, postcard collecting, travelling and cottaging at the cabin they built together on the Bruce Peninsula. He was a wonderful father, instilling values of hard work and perseverance in his kids, Kim and Marnie. Paul and Andrew were besties, enjoying many shared interests and fun outings together. He was a caring son-in-law to Harold and Jean Jarvis, and Uncle Paul to many. His friends were also his family, and he had many friendships that he cherished.
We wish to extend thanks to the dedicated medical professionals and personal care workers who supported Paul, Shay and the family. We are also grateful to our family and friends for their love and support.
A gathering will be held at a future time. In lieu of flowers, we request donations be made to Hamilton Health Sciences, in memory of Paul McWhinnie. These funds will be directed for investments in the Prosthetic Clinic and the important work of Dr. Sharon Grad and her team.
May Paul rest in peace, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, generosity, love, and the profound impact of his commitment to both business and family. His courage will inspire those fortunate enough to have witnessed his journey.

Paul was a great friend to my father and I remember him taking the time to show me his post card collection and walking along the shore with our families when I was about 10 years old. Condolences from the entire Webb family.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Paul’s passing , he has been a mentor of mine for over 25 years and instrumental in the success of our business by his wisdom and deep understanding of the menswear industry . I so respected the love he had for his wife Schazy ! And the caring time he spent through her illness ,never complaining simply saying “ she would do the same for me” my deepest sympathy to all the family 🙏🏽
