It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Gordon (Gord) Smith of Hamilton, who departed this life peacefully on October 13th, 2026. He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Grace. He is also survived by his devoted children Mike (Jan) and Bryan (Catherine), his cherished grandchildren Erin, Jamie (Steve), Mikayla, Jared and Liam plus his great grandchildren Rosie, Aubrie and Ava.
Born on March 3, 1934 in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia and growing up in Halifax. Gord moved to Hamilton in his late teens where he started working as a casket maker before moving to a career in the banking industry. Later he moved to the insurance industry where he retired from in 1994.
Beyond the professional life Gord was a man of faith, integrity, humor and a love of dogs. Gord was a recipient of the Order of Niagara and he also held many positions in the church which included Warden and treasurer. Gord was also the Chairman for the 97th Scouting Group Committee for many years.
He was always happiest when building something, from model train layouts, model ships and airplanes to doll houses and toy boxes. His greatest joy, however, was his family to whom he gave unconditional love, wisdom and support. Gord was always there for his family in any capacity that he could. Along with Grace, they would attend camping trips, gymnastic and skipping competitions and simply spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Gord spent the last 7 years at Wentworth Heights volunteering and participating in many social events. We send a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Wentworth Heights for their care and support over the years.
As per Gord's wishes, there will be no funeral or visitation service and the family asks that you keep them in your prayers.
"A spiritual journey doesn't end in death. Death is but a passing through a door that opens unto a new life. In this journey goodbye is just a pause. The ones we love are never far from our hearts."
Goodbye Gord, Dad, Papa and great Papa until we meet again.
